FINAL ROLL CALL

Corporal Kris M. Korsun

The Hillsborough Township P.B.A. Local #205 sadly announces the untimely passing of one of its own...retired Corporal Kris M. KorsunAfter a long battle with cancer, Kris passed on quietly at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital on April 20, 2006.  Kris (or the Silver Fox as we called him), began his law enforcement career on March 16, 1970 when he was appointed to the Hillsborough Township Police Department.  On December 8, 1970, he became one of the charter members of P.B.A. Local #205.  During his career, he always displayed a professionalism and dedication to duty that helped to establish the reputation that this Department enjoys today.

Corporal Korsun's 26 years with the Hillsborough Township Police Department were spent assigned to the Patrol Division.  During that time he accumulated numerous letters of appreciation from citizens that he assisted.  A common theme among these letters was Kris' genuine concern and caring attitude.  An excerpt from one of these letters pretty much says it all: "The influence and concern he showed the children gave them trust."

Kris received several Command Citations from Hillsborough Township's Chief of Police during his years here.  These were for diligent observations and commitment to proper police procedure which resulted in the apprehensions of suspects in thefts, burglaries and an armed robbery.  He was also recognized by Manville's Chief of Police for his assistance in apprehending a suspect who had just robbed a convenience store.  The suspect had been hiding in a local scrap dealer's warehouse which was subsequently searched with the aid of a canine unit.  After failing to locate the suspect, the canine unit moved out of the building to the outer perimeter of the property.  Kris did not believe that the suspect had been able to escape from the building, so he remained close.  He and other officers began another search of the building.  While searching the building, Kris found the suspect hiding behind and under a pile of scrap metal and barrels that were stacked in a corner of the building.  There is no doubt that without Corporal Korsun's diligence and perseverance, this criminal would have gone undetected and would have escaped apprehension and prosecution.

Corporal Korsun also received many letters of appreciation from the Chief of Police.  One in particular really illustrates his outstanding qualities.  Kris was working the 3:00 PM-11:00 PM shift on this particular day.  Both he and another officer were dispatched to a rescue squad call where a 14 month old girl had apparently stopped breathing.  Upon his arrival, Kris immediately recognized the situation as critical.  He began to provide artificial respirations to the little girl until oxygen could be administered.  Thanks to his quick action, the child was revived.  His experience and easy going manner resulted in his being appointed to one of the first corporal positions established in this Department on January 30, 1989.  He served as a Field Training Officer for new officers and he imparted his fine qualities onto his trainees.  Many of the officers we have today are of the fine caliber that they are, thanks to Kris Korsun.

All the members of the Hillsborough Township P.B.A. Local #205 wish to offer Kris' wife Christine and his family our sincerest condolences for their loss.  As for the men and women of P.B.A. Local #205, we will never forget Kris.  For those of us who knew him, he will live on in our memories forever, and for the new officers who were never fortunate enough to have known Kris, he will live on in the war stories that we will tell them.  They will learn many lessons from the stories of Kris' exploits, but more importantly they will learn the philosophy that Kris governed his career by; "If you're going to be a cop, BE A DAMNED GOOD ONE!"  We will miss you, Kris.
